Our Four-Legged Friends Always on the Guest List: The Lab's Official Canine Policy

Most research facilities have strict rules about who gets through the door. Coco Lab 172 has one rule about dogs, and it fits on a single line: dogs are always on the guest list. No application form, no review board, no waiting period. This may be the only policy in the lab that required no testing at all.

The Hypothesis

A café visit improves when the dog comes too. The walk does not have to end at the door, nobody has to be tied up outside while their owner orders, and the morning routine stays intact from start to finish. The lab considered this hypothesis and found no reason to run the study. The conclusion was accepted immediately.

The Control Group

Every experiment needs a baseline. In this case, it is the standard dog-walk morning: leash, route, coffee somewhere along the way. Coco Lab 172 is open every day of the week, so the stop fits any day's walk. The café sits on Carrer Gran de Gràcia in Gràcia, which makes it an easy stop on a walk through the neighbourhood rather than a detour.

What the lab offers is simple: the same welcome for the dog as for the person holding the leash. The rest of the visit runs the way any other visit does.

The Human Variables

The dog's order is outside the scope of this study. The human's order, however, is fully documented.

For a short stop, the Cortado or a Double Espresso works well. Both are small, strong and quick to finish, which suits a dog who considers the walk only half done. The Orange~Ginger Shot, made with fresh orange and raw ginger in a small cup, is another fast option for mornings that need a push.

For a longer sit, the Flat White pairs with the Egg & Cheese bagel, made with scrambled egg, cream cheese and emmental. For something heavier after a long walk, the Ham, Egg & Truffle bagel brings Iberian ham, scrambled egg, emmental, truffle oil and rocket. Researchers who prefer a lighter result can choose the Açaí bowl, made with banana, strawberries, blueberries, granola and grated coconut.

Why the Policy Exists

The lab's entire identity is built on a simple idea: take the coffee and the bagels seriously, and take nothing else too seriously. A dog-friendly policy follows naturally from that. A café that calls its bagels The Carb Experiments and its juices The Vitamin Bombs is not a place built around formality. It is a place built for everyday life in Gràcia, and everyday life in a walkable neighbourhood often involves a dog.

There is also a practical side. With the lab open every day, there are three natural dog-walk windows: the morning walk, the midday break and the evening round. Each one has a fitting order, from the first Cortado of the day to the Pastrami bagel as an evening experiment.

The Conclusion

Ninety-nine percent of scientists agree that a coffee tastes better with a dog nearby. The remaining one percent did not bring theirs. Coco Lab 172 is at Carrer Gran de Gràcia, 172, open daily, or until the lab runs out of carbs. The policy is short, the welcome is permanent, and the dog is always on the guest list.
